Pool Knowledge 101
We understand pool maintenance can be tuff, so here are a few FAQs designed to address common questions about your pool.
-
What should my chemical levels look like?
Maintaining proper chemical levels is crucial for a balanced and safe swimming pool. The ideal chemical levels are as follows:
Chlorine: 1-5 parts per million (ppm)
pH: 7.2-7.8
Total Alkalinity: 80-120 ppm
Cyanuric Acid: (30-50)* - 100 ppm
Calcium Hardness: 250-500 ppm
*=ideal
Regular testing using a reliable pool water testing kit is essential to ensure these levels are within the recommended ranges. Adjustments can be made by adding appropriate chemicals to achieve the desired balance. Consult with a pool professional for accurate testing and chemical recommendations based on your specific pool's characteristics. -
How often should I clean my filters?
The frequency of filter cleaning depends on various factors such as pool usage, debris accumulation, and the type of filter you have. As a general guideline it’s recommended to clean:
Cartridge Filters- Every 3 to 4 months.
DE Filter- Every 5 to 6 months. While regularly backwashing monthly.
Sand Filter- Replacing sand every 3 to 5 years. While regularly backwashing monthly.
However, it's important to monitor your filter's pressure gauge and clean it whenever the pressure rises above 10 psi from the clean, starting point. -
How long should I run my filter for?
In Arizona, the duration for which you should run your pool filter depends on factors such as pool size, filter type, bather load, and environmental conditions. As a general guideline, it is recommended to run the pool filter for 8-12 hours a day. This duration allows for sufficient water circulation and filtration to maintain water clarity and prevent the accumulation of debris and contaminants.
-
How often should my pool be drained?
Pool draining depends on factors such as water quality, chemical balance, and maintenance practices. As a general recommendation, residential pools typically benefit from a complete drain and refill every 2-5 years. However, if you encounter persistent issues with water quality, excessive chemical build-up, or other specific circumstances, it may be necessary to drain and refill the pool more frequently. Consulting with a pool professional can provide a more accurate assessment based on your pool's unique needs.

Why is algae growing in my pool?
Algae growth in pools can be attributed to various factors. The most common causes include inadequate sanitizer levels, poor water circulation, improper pH and alkalinity balance, insufficient filtration, and excessive leaves/debris in the pool. Algae thrives in warm and stagnant water conditions like Arizona. There are three different types of algae: Green, Yellow (Mustard), and Black Algae. While algae is reversible, it's important to regularly maintenance your pool to best prevent algae growth.

How long should I wait to swim after adding chemicals?
After adding chemicals to your pool, it is important to allow sufficient time for them to disperse and properly mix with the water. The waiting period can vary depending on the specific chemical added. However, it's crucial to refer to the manufacturer's instructions and chemical labels for specific guidance on recommended waiting times after adding each particular chemical to your pool.
